Stuck in a week, I can do it!

Well the week went pretty good. I learned to do some new things. Besides growing our food, and raising our animals, we have other things we have to do. We raise Black Angus cattle, with that comes fencing. The floods not only took out fence, the wind and rain also brought down dead trees.

Sherry learning how to use the bucket of the small tractor.

You can’t see the fence, because it is down. Hubby was at work, and when he gets home, his plate is full. I decided to help him by cleaning up all I can. I went and got the tractor and started. I picked up my first load, and was taking it over to the fence to dump it over. This was the first time I used the loader, I was a little on the scared side.

This was the field when I was finished. The ones left behind are to big for me to lift. I was afraid with the fence around them, I would make a worse mess pushing them.

This was me thanking God I got it dumped over the fence.

By the time I was done, I was feeling proud to had learned something new

Everyone Have a wonderful day!

Flood waters and row boating.

This is the way we looked yesterday,

Beside and behide the house.

Our road is blocked both directions , so this is our ride. Hubby and I go across before daylight . He rows across, I drop him off, then I row it back. In the evening I go back and pick him up.

Where we cross every morning.

On the other side of the house the road is closed also. After this closure there are 2 others past this, so not an outlet.

We will be doing this for the rest of the week. We crested during the night, at 16.4ft. We might be able to drive out Saturday but it depends, it rained north east of us, so we will see. That feeds our rivers here.

This is one of the reasons, we are doing more canning, dehydrating and putting up more food storage. I don’t get to the store like I did before I retired. So now that I’m home full time, I really want to try my hand replacing the store, with home grown.

Neg temps on the farm

Rinny will be moved into the heated garage for the next few days. She hates it!!! She will bark, cry, anything to get outside. She is a farm dog, she has warm places to go, hay in the barn. The chicken coop has a side just for her with deep layers of pine shavings, good and dry. In all this , yes she will sit outside my door…………

By the time I got back to this post to finish we are through the cold snap and into a rain gusher. We are getting around 4 in. of rain, hope all goes well. We do live next to a major river, we aren’t on the banks but get the floods. I’m very well prepared for being blocked in. Few years back we were in for 21 days. The reason I keep a well stocked pantry. The reason I raise a garden and can all I do. Two years ago, I lost a full freezer of food. It was in the high 90’s low 100’s and we were gone. By the time we returned we lost 1/2 a beef, frozen veggies and I said never again. The veggies will be canned best I can and the beef, some will be canned and some left frozen. You learn from your mistakes, we bought 2 new freezers, split the beef.

This was my last seed haul. I do love seeds and sometimes don’t know when to stop. LOL I’ll be starting these soon. I hope everyone made it through the cold spell. Have a wonderful day.

Well, I tried the ride!

Hubby had to work over night, the night of our 7-8 in, snow storm. I know every time he is gone during bad weather, something happens. Well when I got up the next morning, the cows were out! Yes, that is a big deal. I hate trying to mess with cows. Give me the garden any time. Well, not only was the cows out , the snow plow (which I’m thankful for) plowed. He left a ridge 2 ft or better across the drive. There was no way he could get the car in. So I needed to do that too. So what’s a girl to do, play with the new toy.

It was fun after I learned how to do all the gears, lol

I had never driven it, I would ride with hubby and watch. He would ask and see if I wanted to drive, but it’s easier without him watching. So I did have to set in it for over 5min. just to see how to turn it on. Then another 5 or 10 to figure out which gearshift to use. I did it, got it moving in slow gear ,got a little better as I got use to it. Then I got to love it! Hubby might be in trouble.

This was my view, so pretty.

Heck, it has heat, air and a radio. Yelp, I might have to claim it as my toy. I did get the cows in.

The cows followed the tractor, so all went in but one. I locked him on the pond side and hubby took care of him when he got home and rested.

So I got back in the tractor, took a quick pic of our home and headed back.

Our farm, Jan 2019

I got the tractor put up, back into the house and ready to drink a hot cup of coffee. Then I heard it. A large knock at the door, my thinking ,now what. This is what I found.

Rinny, she had flopped next to the door. See that look, that’s a look of “Hey mom, I just got out of my pen!” I let her stay out. no other dogs were out and about, it was to cold. I wasn’t going to let her down. I mean look at those eyes, yelp I’m a sucker.

Garden Planning

The garden planning is coming along. My garden spot is 50X38, next to a plot where I am going to plant corn and squash. I will be trying very hard to fill up my pantry with home grown goods.  I have been wearing out my seed books. writing and circling the things I’m interested in. Are yours worn too?

We planted 6 peach trees last year along with starting a bigger strawberry patch from our runners. I moved my young cherry trees over in the orchard, next to the peaches. We also have persimmon, pecan, walnut and hickory nut trees. Over next to the new orchard is a roll of blackberries and a roll of raspberries. My hubby and I have been building our homestead for a few years but just in the past 2 have we built up the orchard and berries. I retired last year and ready to have a blast in the garden and orchard. We won’t receive any blessings from the peach this year but my cherries are well established. I should have my work cut out for me. I have a pantry closet that is ready to be filled.
